Short FMLN Candidate Bios
FMLN Candidates for President and Vice-President
Mauricio Funes: Born 1959. He studied Language and Literature, with a specialty in Communications at the Central-American University. Though active during his time as a student, he was not affiliated with any particular party. Funes began his career in journalism with 1986 with Channel 10. In 1987, switched to Channel 12, where he hosted a popular morning interview show as well as served as News Director. During this time, Funes also worked with CNN Español for 15 years. In 2005, Funes’ 18-year stint at Channel 12 came to end, many believe because of his outspoken criticism of ARENA. In 2007, he became the FMLN’s first presidential candidate who is not an ex-combatant.
FMLN Vice-presidential Candidate
Salvador Sánchez-Cerén: Born 1944. He graduated from Alberto Masferrer, a school for teachers, with a degree in primary education. In the 1970’s, he became politically active against the dictatorship, and eventually joined the Fuerzas Populares de Liberación (FPL -Popular Liberation Forces), one of the five guerrilla groups that would band together to form the FMLN. In 1984, he became a member of the FMLN’s top command. With the signing of the Peace Accords in 1992 the FMLN became a legitimate political party, and Sánchez-Cerén was elected as a Representative and headed the FMLN faction in parliament. In 2007, he became the FMLN’s vice-presidential candidate.
