Photographer and Filmmaker Christian Poveda Killed in El Salvador

Christian Poveda, a French-Spanish photo journalist and filmmaker, was found shot to death in a car Wednesday afternoon in Tonacatepeque, a municipality north of San Salvador.

Though Poveda was best known for his 2008 film La Vida Loca, which followed the lives of members of Mara 18 street Gang, he first came to El Salvador as a photo journalist during the 1980’s to cover the civil war.  He returned in the 1990’s to cover the Central American street gangs, which have grown into vast criminal networks that stretch from El Salvador to Mexico and most states in the U.S.

President Mauricio Funes, who had a long career in journalism before running for President, said that he is shocked by the killing and has ordered a full investigation.
