May 28th Earthquake

At 2:24am (El Salvador time) a 7.1 earthquake occurred in the Caribbean area 80 miles north/northeast of La Ceiba, Honduras. It had a depth of 10km (6.2 miles). The U.S. Geological Survery reported that three hours after the quake a magnitude -4.8 aftershock struck off Honduras.

Honduras experienced building damage, as well as a fire in San Pedro Sula. Homes were toppled along the Caribbean coast in Honduras and Belize, killing at least 6 people and injuring 40. 57 homes were destroyed and another 65 damaged. Also destroyed were two churches and three bridges.

The summit of foreign ministers of the Organization of American States (OAS) is planned for next week in San Pedro Sula. OAS Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza said in Washington that San Pedro will still host the meeting.

The earthquake was felt in El Salvador, Guatemala and northern Nicaragua but no damages have been reported in these countries. People in Mexico and on several islands in the Caribbean also reported feeilng the quake.
